LK Hjelle - Mai Fabric | Sustainable Norwegian Upholstery

Meet Mai!

We are now launching Mai, a brand-new upholstery fabric designed by Andreas Engesvik and developed specifically for our furniture collection. The textile was created in parallel with the Gaia sofa, combining contemporary Norwegian design with environmentally responsible production.

“With Mai, we wanted to develop a textile that adds a distinct character to our furniture while meeting our standards for responsible production. This is an important step in our commitment to more sustainable material choices and solutions”

– Dag Hjelle, Head of Development and third-generation furniture maker.

A fabric with structure and tactile quality

Mai is a structured upholstery fabric with a subtle yet vibrant surface.

“Mai has a refined tactility and structure. From a distance, it appears almost monochrome, but up close it resembles a pearl knit. The textile is composed of three threads in different colours, creating a three-dimensional effect that brings life to the furniture.”

Jannicke Grung, industrial designer at Andreas Engesvik.

Colours inspired by Nordic spring

Mai is available in four light, muted pastel tones – yellow, green, red and grey – and works beautifully across sofas, lounge chairs and other pieces in the LK Hjelle collection.

The colour palette is designed to complement modern Nordic interiors, offering a light and harmonious expression.

The calm tones make the fabric easy to combine with a variety of materials and furniture, whether you prefer a cohesive look or subtle contrasts.

Environmentally responsible production in Norway

Mai is a climate-neutral upholstery fabric, developed with a focus on quality, longevity and responsible production processes. The fabric is produced in Norway by Innvik AS, a renowned textile manufacturer with a long-standing tradition.
