Sustainable Furniture Made in Norway | LK Hjelle - LK Hjelle

Sustainability at LK Hjelle: furniture made to last

We have made furniture at our own factory in Sykkylven, Norway, since 1940. Sustainability for us comes down to three things: local production, materials that last and furniture that can be repaired and passed on for generations. Our vision is simple: no one should want or need to throw away an LK Hjelle product. Ever.

Made in Sykkylven

All our furniture is made at our own factory in Sykkylven, the heart of Norway’s furniture industry. Nearly all our suppliers are located within around 90 kilometres of the factory. That means short transport distances, lower emissions and full control of quality throughout production.

We are proud to carry the Made in Norway label.

Materials that last

We use solid wood, durable upholstery fabrics, leather and sheepskin, chosen because they stand up to everyday use, not only because they are beautiful. Our seats are filled with high-resilience cold foam, designed to keep its shape and comfort for decades. Furniture should grow more beautiful with age, and that requires materials that can take it.

Falcon lounge chair circular design

Built to be repaired

Circular design means a piece of furniture can be renewed instead of replaced. Many of our products are built with replaceable components and made for reupholstering, refurbishment and renewal. Modular construction lets products be extended and rearranged over time. All our new designs since 2021 are developed with this approach, and the design classics Siesta and Falcon are circular too.

Circular products:

Siesta, Falcon, Ada, Less, Gaia, Ami and Lobby.

Example: the Ami chair over 20 years

– Year 1: Producing the chair accounts for 90.1 kg CO₂e.

– Year 10: A new seat cover instead of a new chair. Added footprint: 10.3 kg.

– Year 15: The seat foam is replaced and the rest of the chair is kept. Added footprint: 11.68 kg.

– Year 20: Full new upholstery, perhaps for a new owner. Added footprint: 30.15 kg.

The chair can go on for as long as someone looks after it.

Documentation

We hold several environmental certifications, including Grønt Punkt, Miljøfyrtårn, EPD Norway, The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and Møbelfakta. Documentation for each product is available on its product page.
