The Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence in Copenhagen

At Valeursvej, in the leafy Hellerup district north of Copenhagen, stands the Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence.

Built in 1934 as a gift from the Danish people to their first social democratic Prime Minister, Thorvald Stauning, the villa is considered a historic example of Danish functionalism, its clean lines and light-filled rooms embodying the ideals of the era. The building now houses Norwegian art and design furniture, bringing a piece of Norway into the heart of this Danish landmark.

Modernising with respect for history.

When the Norwegian state acquired the villa in 1991, architect Susanne Kongsted extended the second floor to create a private residence for the ambassador, carefully preserving the villa’s original character.

Rooms in soft, evocative tones, like lilac, green, blue and pink, echo Norwegian fjords, forests and midnight sun.

Among the pieces furnishing the residence today are designs from LK Hjelle – a fitting continuation of the villa’s role as a showcase for Norwegian craftsmanship abroad.

LK Hjelle’s furniture sits quietly at home in a house built to bridge two nations – a small, lasting reminder that good design travels well.
